The house is about a 3 minute walk to the State forest that encompasses Mystery Bay, and across the road, the sun sets over Gulaga mountain, a sacred mountain for the Yuin people of southern New South Wales.
A 10 min drive will take you to the cosy township of Central Tilba where there is a market on Saturday mornings in the local hall, and a Cheese factory with dairy at the bottom of the hill (milkshakes for the kids) and the pub at the top, where there is live music on a Sunday afternoon (for the whole family), and a myriad of boutiques and other delights in between.
What’s the mystery in Mystery Bay?
Originally named Mutton Fish Bay because of its plentiful abalone (mutton fish), the town became known as Mystery Bay after the fateful day on Sunday, 10 October 1880 when a holed fishing boat was discovered.
Gold had been discovered at a place called Montreal, near Bermagui, and the Mines Department sent Lamont Young, one of its geologists, to inspect and report on the find. He was accompanied by a German friend, Louis Schneider, a botanist. After arriving at Batemans Bay by steamer, they secured a boat and crew of three to row them to the gold fields. At about 7 am on the Sunday morning his rowing boat was seen by several residents leaving Bermagui and others noticed it as it moved slowly north along the coast.
The next time the distinctive green boat was seen was at Mutton Fish Point at 4 pm that afternoon by a man riding along the coast. He alerted police who examined the scene and noted how it had been carefully steered through about 70 metres of jagged rocks. There were four large holes in the hull but created from the inside-out. Personal items had been left behind- but the men had disappeared. An intensive search followed for many months- but no clues to their disappearance has ever been found…
It makes for a much more interesting name than Mutton Fish Bay. And names the road upon which you will find Spotted Gum Retreat- Lamont Young Drive.
