Locals love the quiet haven that is Mystery Bay, off the main road and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life But within 10 minutes drive you’ll find the town of Narooma with supermarkets and restaurants as well as the picturesque Central Tilba with its boutiques, pub and cheese factory not to be missed.

“Best Idyllic Bushland Retreat – NSW”

LUXlife Resort and Retreat Awards 2022

The house is a spacious 2-storey besser brick and timber home with timber floors and rafters and loads of character set on a large bush block.

Each of the two bedrooms boast brass queen beds with an additional two bunk beds in the second bedroom. There is a queen size sofa bed in the lounge where you can sleep in front of the fire.

There is one downstairs and one upstairs bathroom, and an external laundry with toilet off the back deck.

Lots of books for holiday reading and some games and puzzles for an idyllic quiet afternoon.

There are lots of stunning bush and beach walks to blow your cares away.

The township is quite level, so ideal for riding your bike to the beach and on some of the bush trails.

A bumpy 3km drive (or uphill walk) will take you through the forest to the South of mystery bay, to 1080 beach where you will have spectacular views of the coast. Access this via the forest road off Lamont Young Drive.

The house is about a 3 minute walk to the State forest that encompasses Mystery Bay, and across the road, the sun sets over Gulaga mountain, a sacred mountain for the Yuin people of southern New South Wales.

A 10 min drive will take you to the cosy township of Central Tilba where there is a market on Saturday mornings in the local hall, and a Cheese factory with dairy at the bottom of the hill (milkshakes for the kids) and the pub at the top, where there is live music on a Sunday afternoon (for the whole family), and a myriad of boutiques and other delights in between.

What’s the mystery in Mystery Bay?

Originally named Mutton Fish Bay because of its plentiful abalone (mutton fish), the town became known as Mystery Bay after the fateful day on Sunday, 10 October 1880 when a holed fishing boat was discovered.

Gold had been discovered at a place called Montreal, near Bermagui, and the Mines Department sent Lamont Young, one of its geologists, to inspect and report on the find. He was accompanied by a German friend, Louis Schneider, a botanist. After arriving at Batemans Bay by steamer, they secured a boat and crew of three to row them to the gold fields. At about 7 am on the Sunday morning his rowing boat was seen by several residents leaving Bermagui and others noticed it as it moved slowly north along the coast.

The next time the distinctive green boat was seen was at Mutton Fish Point at 4 pm that afternoon by a man riding along the coast. He alerted police who examined the scene and noted how it had been carefully steered through about 70 metres of jagged rocks. There were four large holes in the hull but created from the inside-out. Personal items had been left behind- but the men had disappeared. An intensive search followed for many months- but no clues to their disappearance has ever been found…

It makes for a much more interesting name than Mutton Fish Bay. And names the road upon which you will find Spotted Gum Retreat- Lamont Young Drive.

Lovely Getaway. Home away from home

This was our second visit. Ideal for our furry friends. A short stroll to Mystery Bay beach. Very homely older style house, comfy beds, updated bathrooms. Enjoyed the rustic feel of this home away from home.

Heaps of Character

We had a relaxing stay at Spotted Gum Retreat. Within walking distance to three amazing beaches (Mystery Bay, Billy’s and 1080 beaches) and National Park walks, and a 5 minute drive to Central Tilba, there was so much to see and do. The home, which was lovely and clean, is set in a peaceful bush setting with lots of native birds and wildlife- heaps of character and an excellent library to explore. Would love to return in winter with my family to enjoy the wood fire.

Beautiful beach weekend

Lovely property, well maintained. Check in instructions from the owner were prompt and clear. Property had everything we needed, including toys for the kids (3yo and 5 yo) and even included extra mini toiletries, in case you had forgotten your own. Loved our visit.

Cute well equipped house

We really enjoyed our stay at this cute house in Mystery Bay. It was very serene, with mature Gum trees all around. The beach was also great and just a short stroll away. The kitchen was well equipped, and the kids also found some games to keep them entertained.
